Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ!

Today, many people who live in the countries which allow freedom of religion often wear a cross on a necklace or earrings.  Their reasons for wearing it may be very different from one another.  Some of them may wear it as an expression of their faith in Jesus Christ and as a reminder of their identity as the followers of Jesus. Some will wear it because of its special associations with those who have given it to them, or as a reminder of an important person or event in their lives.  Some may have it simply as a fashion accessory.  Whatever a reason people wear it, the cross will express some deep meaning for them.

In my case, I have never worn a cross; instead I have one on the wall of my study.  I received it from one of my friends for an ordination present.  I hung it, on purpose, just above my laptop, and as I struggle with my thinking and writing, it reminds that Jesus is always with me, especially through the times when I feel that I am all alone in a dark valley.  Then, he becomes my power and my strength and reminds me of God’s goodness and love.

What is the meaning of the cross for you?

Today I’d like share my favourite poem, The Cross in My Pocket, written by Mrs Verna Mae Thomas.

The Cross in My Pocket

By Mrs Verna Mae Thomas.

I carry a cross in my pocket
A simple reminder to me
Of the fact that I am a Christian
No matter where I may be.

This little cross is not magic,
Nor is it a good luck charm
It isn't meant to protect me
From every physical harm.

It's not for identification
For all the world to see
It's simply an understanding
Between my Savior and me.

When I put my hand in my pocket
To bring out a coin or a key
The cross is there to remind me
Of the price He paid for me.

It reminds me, too, to be thankful
For my blessings day by day
And to strive to serve Him better
In all that I do and say.

It's also a daily reminder
Of the peace and comfort I share
With all who know my Master
And give themselves to His care.

So, I carry a cross in my pocket
Reminding no one but me
That Jesus Christ is the Lord of my life
If only I'll let Him be.

With every blessing.
